First- kudos for your kind-heartedness!
It would really help to know the species- even the general location would help.
Wild-caught tortoises are usually so stressed by the captivity that they refuse to eat. Most of the wild tortoises in the US are also really hard to keep as pets for beginners- and REALLY illegal to keep as well!
Their wild diet consists of grasses, (but not common yard grass), hays, a wide variety of plant leaves and stems, flowers (a HUGE part of their wild diet), some berries, some fungi.
PLEASE release it where you found it or surrender it to a local wildlife rescue operation ASAP.
Next time you see on on the road, just move it about 10 yards from the road on side it is heading.

well first off, it is illegal to to take tortoises, turtles, and frogs from the outdoors without the proper lisence or pemit.
second you have to get the exact care for it, uvb bulbs, basking bulbs, infared night bulbs, soaking area, right humidity, the exact diet, some are vegetarians, some or omnivoires. if you dont know what it is you should let it go by the area you got it. but here is a site, go to the care sheet section and try to find the tortoise that you have found www.wnyherp.org...on there you will find the rules and regulations of how illegal it is to take a creature from the wild.
just put it back. and never get it butter, romaine, or iceburg lettuce...little to no nutrients. how about trying collard greens, turnip greens, kale...avoid too much fruits, and cooked chicken breast, shredded up will apeal to their senses...but you have to find out what it needs.

each care sheet has a picture, so you can tell the difference

if you can find a fruitless mulberry tree. get some of the leaves. mine love them and cannot resist them.!!! lettuce is 2nd on his list ,and most fruits though fruit attracts ants and other ant buddies .
they are fairly neat in the house ,but can make a mess when they have to . when i can't get him out to the pen in time he'll go in the kitchen on the floor where its easier to clean .respectful huh ?
they are very cunning and can move alot faster than they will let on. a keen eye is required in the yard.
i use a light color paint in spots to locate in taller grass.not green, not brown.
they hibernate in late fall and wake off and on untill spring. -slow to wake in spring they do not always eat much when they first wake.
hope this helps.

is your tortoise warm enough? we had a turtle that would not eat and it turned out that he was too cold, which made him too sleepy to eat
