I'm thinking some sort of lightweight frame that he can just hold. Silver spandex with a slit in it - and then he pokes his head through when it's time to appear. We are limited on cash and time - but will do what we have to do.

Has anybody made a Mirror costume? How did you do it?

Certainly in your case Lightweight is a key. Foam core, even padded and fabric glued will work to embellish the frame and create an illusion of ornate.

The Mirror can be exactly as you assume, a silvered spandex, slit, allowing the head to press through and then retract when the head isn't present. It can even be flexible to the point that it Moves/Shimmers in proper lighting as the "actor" behind it is likely to. It may also be a hand held device (PROP) rather than a set piece. Gaff tape handles or Rigging cord, etc. on the back side allow it to move away if need be without a CREW member having to set or strike it.

Remember this. It's acting. It's Theater. The audience knows that, and you are a representation of a story. Beyond that, even in a small theater setting, the audience may be 30 plus feet away from the stage, and with lighting and GoBo's the mirror and the eeerie effect of calling it out can be easily effected. Beyond that is the obvious (Blocking) the mirror and the person behind it.

Snow White Mirror Costume

In a university production, we did almost the exact thing described above...buy a very large (about 2 X 3) picture frame and remove the back. Tack a sheet of black felt along the top edge of the back of the frame. You may want to tack the sides as well. Then have the actor stand with his head and chest between the frame and the felt. It looks better than it sounds.

okay so my high school did Snow White this year. We made you mirror wear all black and we used white clown make up on the face and for the mirror we got a decent size one and we didn't put and felt in it but you couldn't tell either way from the audience.
