i put on a 7hp john deer horizontal motor. As long as the threads r the same, does it matter what size it is?

Yes, it does matter very much. As other answers have said, if the threaded portion is too long it can result in damage to the piston. Also you need to have a plug of the same temperature, a hotter plug can cause overheating, resulting in serious internal damage, while a plug that is too cold will yeild poor performance. So, replace the plug with one that is the same as the one you took out and you will be safe on both accounts.

Not only does size matter, but also heat range for your mower. If you want to be sure it doesn't crack the piston head and keeps you engine running properly, get the plug recommended by the manufacturer. You can always pull the plug out and take it with you to the store if you don't know the proper plug.

SIZE DOES MATTER!!!!...there is one important things about spark plugs..you must be sure that the spark plug provides the right amapage or "spark " to help power your engine...the wrong spark plugs will lead to sluggish performace...

Go or call ou local Pep Boys or Auto zone to make sure you have the right plugs...

Yes. If the threaded section is too long, the piston will hit it and either break the plug or piston.
