Free energy has been achieved. Such energy is also called A-value, it is the energy difference between a given conformation and the conformation of the lowest energy of a substitute in a molecule. The most common values are those for axial-equatorial equilibrium in cyclohexanes, for which the conformational free energy of X is:

K = e/a ΔGox = -RT ln K

Pardon my lack of sufficient keys.

Free energy is a term that's been used from time to time for various perpetual motion scams. There is a term in classical physics by that name, but I don't think that's what you have in mind. Energy is conserved - that law of physics seems confirmed by all observations that anyone has ever made. To harvest energy from something, you have to find the excess energy and convert it into a useful form and then deliver it to where it's needed.. That conversion, finding and delivery is usually most of the cost. Solar energy is a good example.... it keeps coming to us from the sun (at least during the day), but it ain't free, as the cost of conversion and delivery are still there. There is enough available nuclear energy on the planet to last human beings forever, but until we figure out how to extract it and deliver it withou nasty side affects, it will be very expensive to deal with. Ain't nothing free, my friend.

The amount of solar energy reaching the earth is huge.

In the southwest the insolence peaks at 7,000 watts per square meter!

Although this energy is free, the cost of the hardware to collect and use it keeps the average homeowner from using it.

Happily, tax breaks, and reduced manufacturing costs are making solar collection more and more affordable.

There are small things you can do, for example, use a clothesline instead of a drier.

I think the OP is asking about mythical free energy from perpetual motion machines. No, energy has to come from somewhere, and you must pay the entropy piper to move it from place to place.

Solar power isn't free, and nowhere on Earth are you going to get 7000 Watts per square meter of it. The solar constant is 1370 Watts per square meter, and that's as much as you're EVER going to get from the Sun.

And given that current solar panels have maybe abaout 15% efficiency, you'd literally have to pave the Earth with solar panels to satisfy the power demand.

There's really no such thing as free energy. Even solar power isn't "free", because the sun is losing energy and will eventually run out of fuel. We're not paying for it, but the Universe is.

Yes. Once solar energy is harnessed we don`t have to buy gas or electricity. China has already taken a step forward.

Nothing is really free in the Real world ,there is always a price to pay in order to obtain something.
