I don't like spraying with chemicals and anyway it doesn't seem to work for long if I try it, plus the old trick of spraying with diluted washing up liquid doesn't seem to work either.

You can also try garlic water, or garlic and vinegar in a spray. Of course, tobacco in water is also OK, but only for ornamentals. Have you considered that your plants could be suffering from a lack of light? White walls that reflect the sunlight will help there. Also get rid of any ants that may be protecting the greenflies, since the ants "milk" them for their sticky secretions. They could also be preventing ladybirds from laying their eggs among the greenflies because their larvae love guzzling up their favourite greenflies. Another reason for greenflies could be that you are fertilising your plants too heavily, and the plants are growing too fast to stay strong and healthy, and rather have a lanky and weak growth.

Don't use diluted vinegar as has been suggested, vinegar is a biodegradable natural agent which contains about 5% acetic acid and will kill plant material. Plant marigolds and use warm not hot soapy water, "dish water" to spray your plants, spray in the evening after the sun has gone down, you may have to spray 2 or 3 times a week. With out climate changing as it is you would have to spray 2 or 3 times a week with chemicals as well.
