The article:

"The body of John Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 am in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue. Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim's loft. Concerned for tenants' safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room. According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Lantham (sic) is survived by one teenaged son. Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening."

IMO the person in the casket is NOT someone we have met yet. The casket is also too short to be any adult we've met, I also think its too short to be Walt's.

It could be anyone but my guess is Michael

1) The funeral home was in an African-American area
2) Michael is the only Lostie from New York and the clipping said the dead man was from New York
3) Jack told the funeral director that he was neither friend nor family. He would not be Michael's friend because Michael betrayed them
4) Which is why Kate would not go
5) If it was Walt then where was Michael. He was obsessed with his son
6) But if it was Michael, Walt could be missing because of his connection to the Island. After all he appeared to Locke

At the end when Ben is sitting in front of the church, he says to Hugo "you were a good Number One" and Hugo says "you were a good Number Two." I think Ben and Hurley stayed on the island and protected it, eventually dying who knows how. I think that Desmond either stayed on the island or left because, as Ben said, never getting to leave the island was how Jacob ran things and there's a new sheriff (Hugo) in town. I think that everyone on the Ageria plane survived and went on to live out their lives - who knows how they died because the writers didn't tell us. So that means that from the first episode of the last season, from the arrival in "LA" of the plane, all the major characters arrived at the great weigh station in the sky and everything that happened there was designed to get them all eventually to recognize each other. It's still problematic though, because what about Daniel Faraday? At the concert, Eloise Hawking says please don't take him and Desmond says okay he won't. And what about Jack's son? Who was he really, and why was he a part of this? At least now it makes sense how Locke recovered from his spinal surgery so quickly. Maybe they'll make a movie to tie up more lose ends later.

the clipping says that the man was an artist and is survived by a teenage son. the name isn't Michael's but he could have changed his name, Michael was an artist before becoming an engineer and Walt would be a teenager, it depends on how long after they left the island that this flash forward is taking place. my money is on Michael being the one in the coffin.

I'm thinking it's someone we haven't met yet since everyone is saying it's someone named John Lantham. However, what if Desmond's name is John Lantham? Desmond could be a nickname or middle name or something. Possibilities. I can't wait for next season.

I'm not sure really who it is but.......knowing lost it will be somebody we don't know therefore it will give a good plot for next season and it means it's probably not one of their group because it if it was Kate should probably feel like she should go.....but just a guess:)

John Lantham was John Locke.

That is the big question. I guess this next season they will start showing us more "flash forwards" and we will have to put things together to see who is left to be in the coffin.

They didn't say in the show. If you go to Lostpedia.com or any of the other websites, you can see blown up versions of the newsclipping - It says that a "man from New York died in Los Angeles, insinuating a suicide. His first name began with Jo........... and the last name ended with .............ntham. "

They never inform you. It is part of the mystery left over. The fact no one was there, that Kate asked "Why would I go?" There is stipulation that it is Ben, but could be anyone.
