They are a professional baseball team in Major League Baseball (MLB). The MLB is split into the American League (AL) and National League (NL), of which the Cubs are a member of the former. Each league is split into three divisions, East, Central, and West, each division generally consisting of 5 teams, although the NL Central has 6 and the AL West has 4. The Cubs are in the NL Central, along with the St. Louis Cardinals (their historical rivals), Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, Cincinatti Reds, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. A few of the teams in this division are among the oldest in all of professional baseball.

The Cubs, along with every other MLB team, have 25 players on their roster at any given time, until late in the season, when rosters are permitted to expand.

Currently, the Cubs have 5 starting pitchers (the pitchers who typically start a game, also called the rotation, as they rotate turns to start), including Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Jason Marquis, Rich Hill, and Sean Marshall.

They also have 7 other pitchers, called relief pitchers, or "the bullpen". These players come in to relieve the starting pitcher of his pitching duties if the starter becomes injured, tired, or pitches very badly. There is also a pitcher in the bullpen called the closer, who is brought into games near the end to try to help seal a win. For the Cubs, their closer is Ryan Dempster, and the rest of the bullpen consists of Bob Howry, Scott Eyre, Ángel Guzmán, Michael Wuertz, Will Ohman, and Carlos Mármol.

That leaves room for 13 position players to fill the spots of the starting lineup (the 8 players, in addition to the pitcher in the NL, who typically start play at the beginning of the game) as well as backup players. The starting lineup of the Cubs has Michael Barrett at catcher, Derek Lee at first base, Mark DeRosa at second base, Aramis Ramírez at third base, César Izturis at shortstop, Cliff Floyd in leftfield, Alfonso Soriano in centerfield, and Jacque Jones in rightfield. Their backup players, also called "bench players" due to sitting on the bench at the beginning of the game rather than starting the game, include Henry Blanco at catcher, Ryan Theriot at second base and shortstop, Daryle Ward at first base and in leftfield, Matt Murton in leftfield and rightfield, and Ángel Pagán in centerfield and rightfield.

Ummm, I can't think of what else to say beyond that. The Cubs are a pro baseball team.
