I need to write my "M1" license, but the centre nearest me only offers LM1 and I don't know if this is actually what I need. Sorry to bother with such a trivial question.

In California there is no such thing as a 'motorcycle license'. That is, you can't just get a license to ride a motorcycle. You have to have a regular car license, then go for a motorcycle add-on, an endorsement. I think this is wrong, it doesn't allow you just to get licensed on a bike. California sees motorcycles as a recreational device, not a transportation device. I'm guessing you probably won't get a whole new license. You might get a little sticker to put on your license, but any cop who stops you will look you up on the computer to see if you have the M1 endorsement. Your next license will say 'M1' on it. It costs money for the DMV to issue a new license, and these days they don't do it even when your license expires! They just send you a card to stick to the back of the license that shows it's been renewed. Good luck on the written test! The last time I took it, I was surprised to see that it wasn't about 'rules of the road' like the car test was, it was about safety and 'defensive riding'. And I flunked it! Then the lady who scored it looked me up on the computer and said "You're a good rider, only one ticket in five years. You didn't even have to take the test!' So anyway, study the booklet, don't just figure, as I did, that it's the same as the car test.
