I think it's not so much *one* contest or *one* advertisement that is the problem, it's the constant innundation of seeing young women only showing off their bodies. Of course, that's what sells, because that's what people want to see. The only way around it seems to be choosing to watch other things on TV, like the discovery channel or stand-up comedy instead.
I think that the "Miss Universe" contest is not inherently degrading, and the women are certainly free to decide whether or not to participate. The problem comes when those sorts of things are *all* that little girls see of young women. It's hard to try to avoid the message that "looks matter above all else" when raising a daughter, but I'm also battling the constant "aggresion matters above all else" message when raising my sons.

Each to their own. Those who enter don't think they're degrading, so let them do as they please. I think old fashioned is perhaps a better word to describe them. Women used to be pretty accessories so in that sense it was quite 'appropriate', judging women on asthetics and 'talents' much like women used to play hostesses at dinner parties. That was never degrading.
It's just cos women's roles have changed and if some women want to continue that's their right and choice and should be no more degrading than a woman who chooses to excell in the business world - it's just being judged on success, but with a different definition of success

If you want to celebrate women's beauty, celebrate natural beauty, in all it's diverse forms. Don't just narrow it down to a tiny, tiny segment that all looks the same- especially when most of it has been achieved by plastic surgery. Sure, they can do what they want. But I think the rest of us have a responsibility to future generations, to keep up the dialogue and remind everyone that that is NOT the only standard of beauty.

to the idiot who posted about anorexia. I'm a model. I used to be fat. I worked my a*s off to become healthy, and NO I'm NOT anorexic. I'm healthy. Just because you may be fat and lazy (maybe you aren't, who knows) doesn't mean you should chastize women who choose to be healthy. I used to be fat and lazy too, and I kicked into gear big time. I admire these women, they look good they feel good and they promote charities after winning such a pageant. I'm sorry that so many women with good intentioned end up being total nazis who think every woman should be ugly because that automatically means they are beautiful on the inside. What a backwards way of thinking.

I think all such contests are degrading to women, just as I think "Mr. Universe" contests are degrading to men. People are more than their physical appearance, but as long as men and women enter these contests and as long as so many people find these contests entertaining, I fear they will not go away.

You're right on. Miss Sweden dropped out because she felt degraded and believes the pageant promotes unrealistic standard of beauty and perfection. Hopefully one day the US will be as socially progressive as Scandinavia...

Yes, pretty much. Although truth be told, even most feminists would like the *opportunity* to turn down the Miss Universe pageant. Sorry, but it's true. You know it is.

Second most offensive thing in the world: busybodies who have no other purpose in life other than to be offended by: pageants, wearing of fur, snail darter habitat, anything and everything.
Most offensive thing in the world: nanny government, enforcing the party line based on the offended sensibilities of the minority of busybodies mentioned above..

How come you and the rest of the world don't have a problem when men are degraded. Let these women degrade themselves, it's their choice.
