i HOPE SOMEONE IN 'THE KNOW' CAN HELP! i HAVE JUST MOVED INTO A NEW HOUSE AND THE CENTRAL HEATING SEEMS ODD!! iF I WANT THE HEATING ON I HAVE TO SWITCH THE HOT WATER ON ( DIDNT HAVE TO DO THIS WITH MY OLD HEATING) BUT IF I HAVE THE HOT WATER AND THE HEATING ON I DONT GET HOT WATER, I THEN HAVE TO SWITCH AN EMERSION HEATER ON TO GET HOT WATER AND I'M SURE THATS COSTING A FORTUNE. IS THIS RIGHT OR SHOULD THE HEATING AND HOT WATER WORK INDEPENDENLTY?

you have whats called gravity hot water , pumped radiators ,used to be called a C plan i would suggest to get it up to modern standards you get it changed to fully pumped with the proper stats and trvs fitted it will cost to change but in long run will save you £s as its more efficient

Andrew is correct, however you should still get hot water when the heating is satisfied, even on gravity. There may be some mis-wiring in the controls. Change to fully pumped with two zone valves and a two channel programmer, or better still a HW timer and a 7 day programmable thermostat (eg. Honeywell CM907) for the heating.

If you have a boiler for heat AND HW then it will need to stay on year round,you might have priorty on it which wont energize the HW pump until the boiler is completely up to temp but usually thats the same for the heat.If you dont over heat with eveything on,I'd leave it like that,your boiler is a FOSSIL fuel so the electric bill shouldnt be too high as long as you conserve until you get familiar on what the bills are normally,

Sounds like youve got the old fashioned heating system the hot water used to get hot from the coal fire or a back boiler so yes u will need the emersion on to get hot water. i used to have to do this but have now upgraded hope this helps.
