Because Desmond would have rushed back in to see Penny. Desmond probably would have drowned and so would Charlie trying to save him. He was meant to drown, it was part of Desmond's flashback that Charlie had to die in order for Claire and Aaron to be saved.

i replaced into questioning the comparable ingredient. yet, to be user-friendly, he would in no way have been waiting to close the door in the back of him by tension from the water (nevertheless you will think of he and Desmond would have escaped). finally, Charlie conventional his "destiny" as foretold via Desmond ,and died a hero. Are you talking approximately Naomi, the female that Locke killed? i won't be in a position to have self belief that Locke is going to be made right into a bad guy via the shows creators, so I could think of that, next season, no longer without postpone Locke would be waiting to persuade his former associates that he did the superb ingredient. What replaced into interesting to me is that the Others did no longer kill everyone (as nicely Mikail who killed his very own people), as damaging to the Losties, who killed a dozen people.

THANKS for asking ;o) I was wondering exactly the same thing. Wouldn't it have made much more sense to leave the room and then shut the door? Why did he have to lock himself inside the room? Maybe he understood that he was meant to die anyway so he decided to die while doing something worthwhile... but I'm still wondering!

Because he believed that it was his destiny to die. He believed, based on what Desmond told him, that in order for Claire and Aaron to be saved, he had to die.
