The three answers are all good. I will use soap filled scouring pads, too. But mostly I let the grill get hot and burn off the gunk, and then scrape/scrub with a wire brush. If your surface used to shine and now it doesn't, the plating could be gone.

Easiest way? Start up the grill, put grates in place, and let the heat do the work for you. The gunk will cook off the grates after a while. Some scrubbing with a wire brush may be in order.

Personally, I'd use a pumice stone to clean grill grates.

Try oven cleaner. The kind that doesn't need heat to clean.
