97 dodge avenger 2.5. it just started the other day, as i was pulling in my driveway i noticed my oil pressure was almost nothing. checked the oil, i was about a quart low. filled it, and started driving and nothing. when i got on the highway the pressure started to raise but just a bit. it is still not above the line indicating the proper pressure. it is still low pressure even with oil in it. could it be just a sensor?

Most likely it is your oil sending unit.Turn your ignition key to the ACC position but dont start the vehicle.Unplug the wire going to the oil pressure sending unit and touch the wire to a good ground.Observe the reading of the oil pressure guage on your instrument panel. The guage should now peg out.If the guage pegs out the guage is fine and the problem is your
oil pressure sending unit.I believe your sending unit is mounted in front driver side of the upper engine block

Was your oil 1 quart low or more than that? Did the oil light come on before you added oil? How many miles are on your car? If you have high miles (over 100K) and your oil has ever been more than one quart low it is probably time to sell or trade in your car. It sounds like you need a new engine.
High temps also thin your oil and reduce oil pressure. You might want to try using a thicker, higher viscosity oil like 20-50. This will give you more oil pressure and give you time to save for a new car.
Does your car smoke when you first start it up in the mornings. That is valve guides. Does your car smoke when you slow down coming to a stop sign. That is rings. Both are major engine problems. Your car is ten years old. Run it til it dies because a Dodge avenger is not worth much now and you can probably drive it longer than you think even with this problem. Do not put any money into repairs for this car because you will be throwing your money away. You will never get repair money back in increased value for your car.
Use thick oil.

Just hope it is the sending unit. Do a oil change with a new filter correct weight oil and also replace the sending unit only after the technician puts in a manual gauge to test what the real pressure is on a mechanical gauge. Low pressure can ruin an engine.

Sounds like the sensor is bad---check the pressure with a mechanical gauge or replace sensor and see what pressure it indicates. If pressure was that low, you would have heard lifters tapping or possibly rod knocks. What kind of miles are on the car--could be oil pump is wearing out....try a thicker oil like 10w-30 instead of 5w-30 on high mileage cars.

It's probably just the sending unit. Replace it and see what happens. If it still has the same prob than you have oil pump issues.

Generally yes. You can simply check your mileage and then go for the correction. If the mileage is correct then it is just sensor or else the fuel company is not being honest.
