If so will it dim the light? If not, is there another solution for energy efficient light control?

I like to use compact fluorescents for their energy efficency but there are rooms in my new house where I'd like to have more control over the light level (dinning room and family room).

There are some CFLs that may be used with a dimmer. Check package labeling.

They sell some that indicate you can use them for a dimmer but I've found that they don't last very long which defeats the purpose. Plus, They take a while to warm up to full brightness so whatever you set them on initially is going to change. I think you would be better off just having low wattage bulbs for that area.

Most, I'm not sure about all, aren't compatible. They will tell you on the package,"Not for use with dimmer".
Dimmers aren't as necessary for C.F. bulbs for the purpose of lowering wattage, because they are drastically reduced already. For energy efficiency, install motion sensors.

I don't think it works. All of my fans are on remotes and the lights are connected to a dimmer. I switched out 1 bulb to try it, and there was no dimming, it was either on or off.

Walmart is now selling CFL bulbs that can be used with dimmer switches. I have not tried one yet. They are a bit more expensive but if they fit your needs, I guess they are worth it.

Flourescent bulbs need a constant voltage and cannot be dimmed. Use longlife spots instead.
