I want to make my desktop PC wireless so, I know I'm going to need to get a PCI card. I already have a wireless router (Netgear ADSL Modem Wireless Router Model DG834GB - 54Mbps; 2.4 GHz; 802.11g). Can I get any PCI card or do I need a specific one that is compatible with my router? Also, I plan on putting my computer upstairs and the only hookup for my router is downstairs (we're in a military post in Germay and there is only one jack in the whole house!). Will I get a good enough signal if I do this? I didn' t know if the walls would interfer with signal etc. Also, if you have any suggestions on what PCI card to get, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks bunches (in advance) for the help!!!

you should get a PCI Wireless Adapter they are fairly affordable.... all depending on your budget you can get a cheaper pci card like this Trendnet for only $17.99.

or spend a little more on a Netgear pci card for about $45.99.

both should work fine but the Netgear will most likely give you better signal reception and link and will most likely last longer.

you should also be able to find these pci cards at your local computer store or even walmart.

hope this information helps you.

If you are using a desktop, you can go with a PCI card, or you might want to consider a USB wireless card instead. Often they will come with a six foot cable so that you have the option of moving the "card" around the room until you find the spot where you can get the best signal.

A wireless router has a range of around 150 feet (or 50 meters). You will need to have your computer within the range. The range can be reduced if there are pipes, lots of wires, too many walls, etc between you and the router. As the signal goes up (and down) just as far as it goes our, being on the second floor should not matter.

If the network plug is too far from your computer, remember that you can always use a long network cable to get the router itself closer to your computer. Try to position if half way between the jack and your computer.

Also, this summer they are suppose to be releasing the first of the 802.n routers and cards. It is a new technology that will give four times the speed and twice the distance of the current 802.g technology. If you can wait 2-3 months, that may be a good option for you.

Finally, remember that when you do set up your wireless network, that you want to remember to secure it with a WEP/WPA password so that you do not get "hacked".

A PCI card is the card you need to put inside your desktop. To use wireless, you need three things. 1. A modem 2. A wireless router 3. A wireless card in your PC. G is the highest save A but A is a crap load more expensive. G is fast and affordable.
