Listen to ALL the replies to your question as they are very valid replies.
In a nutshell, the wedding planner does everything, or only what you want them to do.
HERE IS A HUGE BONUS if you use a planner. If the planner is a good one, that planner will mediate any family disputes between you and say your parents!!!!!!
Some planners take commisions from vendors being used. As a former planner, I would suggest you NOT use a planner who does this. Why? So you won't feel "pressured", which a planner should NEVER do, to use certain vendors. Typically, if you use the vendors "suggested" by the plannner (again, with commision between vendor and planner), you will be paying more that vendor, say a florist, than you would if your planner takes the time to listen to what you want, actually checks around and narrows down the lists of florists, or other vendor, based on quality, cost and what it is you want from that florist. On top of the planner's fee for your wedding, they are making an additional profit by you using the vendors that planners have a commision arrangement with. I'm not saying that is wrong or right. I just don't feel planners should profit from YOUR wedding by conning you into using someone who is going to pay them as well.Certatinly plannners have vendors they are familiar with, and sometimes, can get you a discount. Just remember, when a commision is in place between a planner and vendor, the planner is obviously going to suggest the vendor they can also profit from.
If you go with a planner, ASK if they get commisions. The ones that don't, ask if they can help get you a discounted price. Some planners can, based on their working history with vendors.
Economical? No, not always. However, IF you can afford it, it is worth it. They do all the work, but YOU make the final decisions. The planner is there on your day to act on your behalf, deal with the vendors and other details, so you can simply enjoy your day, remember that wonderful day, without the memories of the problems that might have happened that day. Yo can just simply look back on your day with nothing but smiles.

Wedding planners have all inclusive services or just the day of the event packages. If you have a very organized friend and/or family member that can work with your schedule, receive the cake, watch over the caterer, make sure the church & reception site is set up to your specifications go for it. As a caterer I like the clip board ladies as I call them. They make my job easier. They are a liasion between our company, the DJ, the florist & other vendors such as the bartender, facility and/or church co-ordinators and most importantly the family. As you can see there are alot of people involved in making a wedding happen. I'd suggest you speak with one or two wedding planners and just see how you feel about them, their pricing & if you feel the price that you'd be paying for is worth the cost of their services. If you are getting married in a church they often have a co-ordinator for a nominal fee who provides alot of these services on the day of your wedding/reception. The other thing to take into consideration is that a planner may have contacts with vendors to get you discounted services. Ask about this. Also feel free to ask any of your wedding vendors about the worst thing that ever happened at a wedding and how they solved the problem. That can be a real eye opener...

A wedding planner does everything to helping pick out ribbons for the flowers to making sure your honeymoon suite is great.
A wedding coordinator just makes sure everything flows smoothly with all vendors and events.
Depending on where you are they could work on percentages and flat fees. It is economical if you do not have time to deal with details for a wedding planner. If you need flow help for the day and are handling all details a coordinator could be a friend, but if you are already having issues. I would hire someone.

Personally i feel that any event needs a manager who co-ordinates between various vendors. Ofcourse that comes for a price. If u have someone in the family or some friend who is capable enough, then have him/her co-ordinate it. Wedding planners sometimes are able to get u better prices with the caterers and florists etc because they regularly interact with them. But you will have to keep taking interests in who they are finalizing for what so that they know that you expect the best from them and they just cant take their fee for granted.
If you do have someone around who is a good organizer, then just make a little effort on your own and build a little team to organize the wedding

A wedding planner can do as much as you want or as little as you want. Some will take care of all the fine details like invtites and flowers while many of them offer a la carte services, which you can use on the day of. Some say it's worth it to use a planner, however, I have found that if you ge a GOOD group of friends who are willing to help, you can save that money. Really if you know how you want your wedding to look, tell them and they can help execute that on the day of.

you can totally do it yourself! Yourself meaning your family and friends. If all of you are disorganized then I would suggest getting a planner, however only get it if you have the extra money. You can always save that money for your future house or honeymoon etc. If you choose to get married at a nice hotel, some will provide the planner included in the cost with no limits on contacting them, you just have to choose a certain package. Well good luck and God Bless you and your marriage! :)

I have a free wedding planner. I am getting married on the beach in playa del carmen, mexico. They have planned the whole thing for me, for no fee, according to what I want. I'm just going to show up in my dress and have a really good time. Traditions are made to be broken.

Depends upon how much you're willing to pay them and what you want done.

I didn't hire a wedding planner but I was very laid back about my wedding and let everyone else plan it for me!
