Don't panic yet. Dyes often fade after a wash or two so it may be that it still comes out the colour you wanted it to be.

Hi hun,
Did you dye it permanently or just a semi-permanent? If semi, simply wash a load of times!
If permanent, don't rush for the bleach bottle straight away. If you have never dyed your hair before (or at least, not for a long time) it may be safe to bleach it.... but if you do it yourself, the bleach will not be strong enough and you'll end up with rusty orange coloured hair. You may be able to get it done at a salon.
Another alternative is to buy a powerful clarifying shampoo. I had dyed black hair that I wanted blonde, and a strand test at Toni & Guy proved I couldn't bleach it. Instead I bought some clarifying shampoo from them: http://www.toniandguy.co.uk/productDetail.aspx?id=26&prodRange=0&prodType=6&hairType=0&p=1
It gradually fades and strips colour. A few months on I now have light brown hair.
Hair dye tends to fade quickly anyway, so wash it a good amount of times and it should become a lighter brown colour.
Don't try to put another brown colour on top of it as it will make it even darker.
Don't worry hun, either fade it through washing or see your hairdresser and enquire about bleaching.
xx Emmie

hehe this happened to my sister too. The previous answers are right, just wait till after a couple of washes. If it's still blackish in colour it means that your hair is very porous (sp?), ie it absorbs dye a lot more than normal hair pores (just think of a big dry sponge with water). You might have to consider retrying with a lighter colour and not leaving it in your hair for the recommended time but less time. Otherwise, you might have to go to the hairdresser and have them do it properly.

If you're trying a new hair colour, test the colour as all hair dyes suggest. I didn't the first time I dyed my hair and ended up with orange pink hair instead of red. I suggest going to a hairdresser for advice. Next time, test the colour!

The best thing to do is to just let time help you a bit. It will fade within one month, to a lighter color. If your hair is particularly strong, then you can apply a lighter color. The color you see on the box of tint is done on perfectly white hair, so you have to realize that putting a color on your hair, which for most people is much darker than white, will give you a darker color. Next time use a lighter color so that won't happen.
