I know that the ears affect balance.

My mate has really thick earwax in her ears.

She cleaned out her ears and the wax was about half a cm thick on the cotton bud!

My friend has trouble walking, and sometimes, when she stands still the balance is off and it seems like she is drunk.

Could the ear wax affects the way my friend walks (walking like she is drunk!) and the general balance!

tell your friend not to use a cotton bud in the ear canal she may damage her ear drum, but to use a few drops of olive oil to break down the wax. works a treat.

Yes problems with your ears can affect your balance.
Tell your friend to use warm olive oil in a pipette every day to soften hard ear wax. Medical advice is not to put anything in your ear (even cotton buds) as they simply press the wax down further.
Your ear is like a conveyer belt. It tries to cleanse the ear of wax by passing it out of the ear if you use cotton buds you push it back in again making it harder for your ear to cleanse.

If the olive oil does not work after a week or two she should go to the doctor and get her ear syringed.
Cotton buds annoy me as most people think they are to clean ears but reallly their purpose is to clean the creases of babys skin. They were never intended for ears and i think they should be labelled on the packaging.

She should get this checked out by a doctor as this might be a symptom of something else.
To help clear earwax build up check out Hoopi candles from a good health/ beauty therapist. They draw out the wax. Alternatively a few drops of olive oil in the ear at night was recommended by my GP but it makes a big mess of the pillow!

She needs to make an appointment at the doctors for 5 days time,in the meantime olive oil down the ear every day to soften it.

Then when she goes to the doctor he can syringe them and the wax will be soft,if she goes before she's done that it will be too hard to syringe it out.

I have to have it done every year as I make too much wax,its a massive relief when its removed, believe me.

Do you mean she has been walking like that since long-- or started walking in a stagger ever since the wax has been removed?

consult an ENT specialist immediate, in any case.
Dont go for home grown remedies.

Yes more than likely. She should see her Doctor who can syringe the wax out.

Sounds like she needs to take a trip to her doctors. They can arrange to have the wax removed properly.
If she is still having problems they can refer to the ENT department at your local hospital.
