Personally, I think "nice" and "up-to-date" don't go together. Why not set your own style, something very old-fashioned and romantic, like braids coiled around the head? A fair number of mini-braids (not the Bo Derek, but fewer than that), small enough that they can then be caught up in a clip or comb, is also attractive. Check out books of historical costume and hairstyles, as used by theatrical companies. You'll find lots in the library.
