Hi~My vet lives next door to me & I asked him. He said to remember that cats are just little lions. And still pretty much still behave like their bigger relatives. You have two males, and he said the male that is laying on the kittens is not the father. Male lions kill cubs that are not theirs, & though rare, it sometimes still happens with our pets. He said that he can only guess why the other male is doing what he's doing. But that he could be trying to make the other male move since it is the male that protects when momma is not there. In any case he said his advice is not to allow either male around the kittens until they are older. I sure hope this helps.

It sounds like you are describing mounting that is being done to show social dominance. If you want to stop the male from mounting the kittens, you are going to have to keep them separate. He is trying to show them who is boss. the good news is that it isn't necessarily harmful, if that is all he is doing.

I have a male cat who sometimes mounts my female cat. She generally gives him what-for, and gets away. That, I don't feel the need to intervene between them. But sometimes he just will not leave her alone. So i will separate them. Once in a while they get into a fight, and I end up putting them in time out. I do that by turning empty laundry baskets over them, weighing it down with a heavy boot or something, and leaving them in there for 3-5 minutes. it works because it gives them time to cool down, and start thinking of other things to do than fight.

hmm I would make sure your kittens are in a differant area and the males cant get to them! what does the mother do? once they are old enough they will defend themselves, but you should protect them now!!

i wish i had a good answer for you. cats are "quirky", but i love them anyway. they know what they are doing, i really wouldn't worry about it.
