I like most all of Jackson Pollacks work Look up Blue Poles for one he was the first well know artist to do painting as the art in and of itself when I use to teach I told my students that the act of painting was the art and the painting when finished was the physical evidence that the art occurred if when looking at the painting you are transported to the studio where it was painted and can see that process then it is a very valid piece for you , I can do that with most all of Jackson's work and therefore dearly love them wish I was Bill Gates I would own every Pollack that is for sale in the know world just to put them all together and feel their power, strength and passion as a group. what a kick that would be

You want total honestly from this humble artist? Then I would have to say this painting:

Why? Because this multi-panel painting is like an American family photo album, with snapshots from the 1950s and 60s.

This one is a close second:

Because it signifies and symbolizes passion in it's purest form.

I happened to have painted both of these. But you asked for a favorite modern painting, didn't you? If artists aren't proud of their own work then they shouldn't be painting.

Now, if we're talking about paintings not done by ourselves my list of favorites would be hard to pin down to one painting. But I will mention several such favorites. Like:

Visa - Stuart Davis
Guernica - Pablo Picasso
Lavender Mist - Jackson Pollock
The Eye Of Silence - Max Ernst
Madonna - Edvard Munch
Night Of The Rich - Diego Rivera

And many more ...

Of the above mentioned paintings I would have to pick 'Guernica' because of the almost perfect indictment it makes against unnecessary war and senseless death.

As to Max Ernst, he pre-dated Dali as a surrealist and, in my opinion, easily surpassed Dali's abilities.

Stuart Davis? Like Pollock, he had his own unique style and owed his 'creative voice' to no one.

Two-thirds of what Diego Rivera painted was repetitive crap. But when he truly had something to say, like in 'Night Of The Rich', he was right on target.

Edvard Munch's 'Madonna'? I could did happy if I could leave a portrait this powerful, this overwhelming.

It differs. Mood and time of year influence what I would pick..But this is one of my all time favorites that keeps popping up in my brain.

It is one of the most powerful images I have ever seen. If paintings could convert a man...this would be one of them. It is just breathtaking and sucks you right in.

I like Matthew Ritchie and also, I like Frank Stella.
They are contemporary artists and deal with contemporary themes. They also bring their painting into three-dimensions.

wonderful american hyper realists.

I love the masterpiecies of hyperrealism.

Their paintings reflect modern america"s solitude.

By mimicking reality better than camera they succeeded in depicting the empitiness of our daily life.

Their marvellous thechnic gives me pleasure of confusing ,what is reality and illusion.
