depends on your body weight, how fast you are consuming the beverage, don't go by your tolerance to alcohol though. You may not feel drunk but your BA level will still reach the limit. Supposedly it's like 1 beer every hour and a half or so to remain below your legal limit. Assuming you ate something. Everything comes in to play. If you're worried just take it slow and moniter yourself. That way you'll get more of an understanding as to how much you can safely handle. Some signs: you probably won't notice to begin with but at some point you'll become a bit more relaxed, at that point just try and maintain from there. Drink more and you're pushing the legal limit. Not to say you can't handle more but if you're fearing a breathalizer or something.

I had learned all this years ago when I had to run test for other officers. If I remember correctly, depending on body size, food eaten etc. it was not more than 4 drink but the average was more on the order of 2-3.5. The amount of time used for these classes was one hour to drink it in.
If you had four drinks over a five hour period, I doubt you would register .010. I would keep it to less than one drink an hour ( that doesnt mean a five finger drink either) for the time you are drinking. Even a better guarantee is to eat something in between drinks.
A drink is considered one beer 12 oz, one 6 oz glass wine, one ounce whisky.
