I have questions regarding the whole thing. We were together for 6 years and he gave me the promise ring within our first year. After we broke up I decided to give it back. I tried to give him the promise ring back and he wouldn't take it back. He kept saying that it was mine because he gave it to me and he wants me to have it. We haven't been together for a while now and I just have it. I don't know what to do with it because we are not together anymore. What does one do with an old promise ring?

There is only two options for you. 1, Do nothing. 2, Do something.

A ring is without life. If you discard it, it cant feel sad or happy. If you polish it, it may shine but it wont felt shinny. If you melt it, it wont feel hot. So the ring itself has no meaning.

As you have indicated that it is a promise ring, it is about a promise. The promise may have been broken but that is never the fault of the ring but the parties involved in the promise.

If you chose to discard it, sells it or return it to the man who give it to you, there is no right or wrong. If you chose to keep it to remind yourself of the pain of walking out from a broken promise, it will be ok too. No one will say that you are greedy by keeping it or heartless by discarding it.

The choice is in your hand jus as the fate of the ring is.

Unless this is the Fellowship of the Ring.

If the promise is a broken vow now..keeping it now only makes you remember all that you had you look at the ring and all those memories come back..my advise or if it were me l would throw the ring in a river, ocean or whatever is nearer to you and do a little ceremony to let go!!

The above may sound weird but it would help in moving on

If he refuses to take it back and really wants you to have it you can always turn it into something else. You could take the stone and make it into a necklace or redesign the ring with other pieces you may have laying around that you are not using anymore. Or, you can just keep it as is or give it to someone you know. It's all what you feel most comfortable with.

I think you should sell it. I know what you mean because it would feel odd if I had to sell something like that, but you do need the money. I'm sure you won't give the ring to another girlfriend so it will just sit in your house and not do any good.

That all depends on it's value to you, and whether said value is financial or emotional value.
A. Sell it
B. Have a jeweler turn it into something else, perhaps a necklace or use the stone/gold/silver to make another ring.
C. Keep it in a box as a reminder that promises do get broken.

girlfriend my high school sweetheart gave me a promise ring and he wouldn't take it back so I continued to wear it after we broke up and when I met my husband he took it and threw it in the river!!!!! So I really can't tell you what to do!!

Him telling you to keep it is a cheesy move on his part trying to get a reaction from you. Since you are not with him anymore I would just throw it away or donate it or give it to a little girl or something. Your future man wouldn't like to see it or hear the story of it. Its done with.

Do what the rest of us do with our old rings that our exes have
given to us.Put it in the back of your jewelry box and pray your husband doesn't find them. And that goes for all the old pictures you have of all your old boyfriends.

I'd give it to my little sister so she'd remember to not make the same mistake and loose 6 years of her life on a loser !!

Pawn it! Just kidding. If you want, you can give it back to him, or maybe save it for memories, the good and the bad, or you can re-gift it! :-)
