The rationale behind polygamy is that there are not enough men for each woman if the aim is for all women to live honourably.
By the way polyandry (the practice of a woman having more than one husband) does still exist in certain primitive regions of Asia, especially Tibet where there are not enough women for each man. Usually brothers share a wife.
One might deplore the practice but sometimes necessity forces humans to do things they would normally not do if all situations were normal.

I think there are easier (and cheaper) ways for a man to have sex with multiple women than marrying them!
I think Big Love is like many other HBO shows, with an emphasis on sex. Just like you wouldn't judge monogamous marriages from an HBO depiction, Big Love isn't a true-to-life depiction of how polygamy is practiced for most.
Mormon polygamy (plural marriage) is often confused with the FLDS (and other sects) who are into under-aged marriage, prairie garb, and cult-like leaders. But just like on Big Love, there are those kinds of polygamists and other kinds who want nothing to do with them.
As far as what having multiple wives has to do with getting into heaven, that is a Mormon belief that would take a long time to explain completely. Short version: Polygamy not necessary for heaven. Living plural marriage enables reaching the highest level of heaven.
Actually many Fundies have PC's. Not too many other places to meet up with other Fundies unless you live in one of those communities in Utah/Arizona/Idaho/et al.

I agree that polygamy should never be forced, like the FLDS example you cite. I also agree that polygamy, if legal, has to be allowed both ways: women with multiple husbands, AND men with multiple wives.
But I think I can explain the FLDS model of polygamy. These guys take literally the words of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, the first two Presidents of the LDS Church - and both known polygamists. Fortunately, the mainline LDS Church abandoned polygamy over 100 years ago.
If interested, you can find out more about the FLDS here:

No not originally . It was a matter of practical survival of the species . But that was before we reached strangulation
rates of over population and the problems overpopulation brings such as more pollution and the lessening of the general quality of life in other terms. Share the wealth not the greed .

"Do you think polygamy is just an excuse for a man to boink other women? "
Sometimes ( see D. Koresh ) . IMO not anybody's business ,including government , but theirs, as to "why" they do it . As long it involes, mentally competent ( legally speaking ;D) , consenting adults , it's up to them . Can't say as I'd want to try it . One is complicated enough , but could see where somebody else might. Could be less contentious, as there's a 3rd( or more) person, to act as referee in a disagreement , keeping anger & irrationality from snowballing . * shrug*
" Why can't a woman have more than one husband?"
It can , & is done , although more rarely than the reverse (Mean in general, not neccessarily Mormons) .

Hmmm.
Polygamy isn't an excuse to have sex with multiple women. It's actually practiced in other areas of the world, most notably Africa. But in all cases that I know of, the man has to actually support the women with food, shelter, and clothing, just like he would for a single wife.

What's with all the spittle, this isn't baseball.
I don't get polygamy either and 15 is obviously too young to marry, I am not sure 15 year olds should even drive.

One husband is plenty enough for me.And whatever they call having lots of wives is adultery and an excuse to fool around.

Yes it is and for doing young girls also.
This is not fundamental to Christianity, try Mormonism they are real big on it and still practice it all over Utah.
