A New cop gets a field training officer (FTO) who helps him or her take the theory learned at the academy and apply it in real-life, real-time situations. The FTO is a mentor, a coach and an evaluator. The new officer is a probationary employee for at least as long as the FTO is with him or her. The FTO must issue a passing grade for the new officer on a wide variety of experiences common to the law enforcement profession and crucial to a successful career.
After the FTO has cleared the officer past the initial field training period, depending on the agency, the new officer will be paired with a partner or put out on solo patrol.

You will probably spend 4-5 months at the academy
learning cop shop
then you will have a field training officer as your side kick for 4 months - until they sign off that you can go it alone
that's when you get officially SWORN in
depending on your unit - you make be assigned in pairs
or you may be the solo cowboy
relax - you will not get dumped on the poplulace until you can handle it

Yes. Most departments have a "Field Training Officer" program. Some officers are specially trained to train a new officer ("Field Training Officer" or "F.T.O."). The F.T.O. will train the new officer over about 12 weeks and signs off on topics as you experience or go over them (traffic stops, etc.).

new officers always have a training officer.the training officer turnes in reports daily and weekly.after a predetermined amount of time these reports will be looked at. then there will be a decision made on the abilities of that trainee being a officer. at this it can be decided that more training time is needed. if by this time it still shows improvement is needed then they have a few choices. return to the academy for further training or termination
