Well, its sound cheaper but not the best idea. These are high compression engines, as such they call for high grade fuel quality to ensure smooth and continuous longterm running. The engine will most times create a knocking sound during combustion due to the low level fuel quality. The side effects are many, including rough running, increased fuel consumption, cocking, leading to relatively high maintenance cost. The best idea is to always keep to the right fuel, octane booster might not help always due to variation in volume, fuel-Octane booster.I hope this helps.

There isn't much point to doing it.
The only reason why you would forego the 93 octane gas (91 in CA) in favor of 89 would be to save a little money at the pump. That would be the case if that's all you did. But when you add the cost of an octane booster you're not really saving any money and if you do, it's not going to be much.
An octane rating indicates a fuel's ability to resist detonation that will damage your motor. You would be able to hear this detonation in the form of a knock or a ping. This is most definitely not good for your engine. Your car is turbocharged and also runs very hot. Most people do fine with 89 octanes in their 1.8Ts, but as soon as you hear that knocking/pinging, switch to 91/93. So technically, you don't need any octane booster. If for some reason your car runs fine and you have no problems with detonation, you can save some dollars at the pump by filling with 89.
Octane booster is not the same thing as fuel. It is not meant to be used in your fuel system long-term. Stick with additives used to clean and maintain your fuel system, rather than trying to beef up the potency of your fuel. There are more cost-effective and meaningful ways of boosting the performance and efficiency of your motor.
My recommendation...
-Try to stick with the 93 octs rather than using an octane booster... like I said, little to no savings if at all.
-If you need to save a dime, try switching to 89 and listen carefully for detonation. If it occurs switch back to 93 and boost your first tank with the booster.
-Regardless of what you do, consider a fuel system/valve cleaner like Chevron Techron (not the fuel, it's an additive) or Lubro Moly Jectron and Lubro Moly Ventil Sauber (my favorite). These are used more periodically and will keep your fuel system as clean as it will get using only additives.
Lastly, unfortunate as it is, the Jetta is a small car with a crazy motor in it. That motor is a great performer but it's also very sensitive. Beware of anything you put into it. For instance, in a lot of cases, using MotorFlush or a similar kind of flushing additive can damage your valve lifters and with some models cause catastrophic failure. Your best bet is to ask your fellow VDubbers at vwvortex.com or audiworld.com. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience in their forums.
Best of luck!

Just a note on p229 answer, you dont actually have to be able to hear the pinking/knocking for it to be doing damage, especially in a turbo car. Dont take the risk cause octane boosters never seem to hold up to there promises and its cheaper to use the correct fuel than to rebuild an engine

No, the octane enhance+87 expenditures extra beneficial than ninety two. additionally the traditional octane enhance will improve octane 3 factors, that's .3 of an octane score. examine the can. My automobile runs on Cam 2 GT that's one hundred octane unleaded.

The car will run fine like that, and it can run on 89 alone too but the check engine light may come on. I have 99 1.8T and I use regular gas once in a while. Nothing happens....
