The drivers, at the end of the racing season have a 10 race competition for the last scheduled 10 races. The drivers that are "in the chase" are the ones who ranked the highest throughout the season and had the top 10 highest points up to the last 10 races(the chase races). The "on the bubble" racers are the guys who could make it in depending on how everyone does right up until the last race just prior to the chase. It could come down to very few points difference right up until the very last race which is why they say some guys are on the bubble - if you do badly, you could be out. If the guy under you does better than you, you could be out and he could be in. Very unpredictable. When the chase does begin, they start over with a new points count and then you see some real racing. You will catch on if you watch. It isn't as hard as it seems.

Each Friday or Saturday before a NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race an event called qualifying takes place. Each NASCAR driver that wishes to starts the race runs 2 or 3 laps on the track and tries to have the fastest time. Whoever has the fastest time starts "on the pole", or they start first in the given race.

The pole is the fastest time in qualifing. This normally the 1st starting spot on the inside row.
Legend of the term pole goes back to Europe when the start/finish line was marked with a pole. The runner or horse starting in the lane next to the pole was said to be on the pole.

"On the pole" means that a driver has the fastest time in the 2-lap time trials which drivers must participate in to qualify for the race (although NASCAR's new qualifying rules make this a much more complicated issue than I have just presented).
I'm not sure where exactly the phrase originated, but I would hazzard to guess that it refers to the fastest driver in qualifying having his name/car number at the top of the scoring pylon (or pole) at the start of the race.
The scoring pylon, by the way, is a tower which displays the running order for each lap of the race.

couple days b4 a race all the drivers qualify to see where they start. 2 laps fastes times start first or on the pole. it has nothing to do with strippers. its just who gets to start in the first postion.
