The greenhouse effect was first predicted in 1896 well before the effect started.

The following is from the CDIAC website: The first person to have predicted that emissions of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels would cause a global warming is considered to be S. Arrhenius, who published in 1896 the paper "On the influence of carbonic acid in the air upon the temperature of the ground." That atmospheric carbon dioxide was actually increasing was confirmed beginning in the 1930s, and convincingly so beginning in the late 1950s when highly accurate measurement techniques were developed (the most famous demonstration of this is in C.D. Keeling's record at Mauna Loa, Hawaii). By the 1990s, it was widely accepted (but not unanimously so) that the Earth's surface air temperature had warmed over the past century. An ongoing debate is whether such a warming can, in fact, be attributed to increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The greenhouse effect is the term used to describe the way in which greenhouse gases trap heat within the Earth's atmosphere.

The primary greenhouse gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect are water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. There are many others that exist in very small amounts including the CFC's and the similar HFC's and HCFC's.

The grenhouse gases are molecules unlike the major gases in the atmosphere which are atoms (nitrogen, oxygen and argon account for more than 99.9% of the atmosphere).

Heat from the sun (solar radiation) has a very short wavelength and has no difficulty entering our atmosphere, the heat that is radiated from Earth (thermal radiation) has a longer wavelength and the large molecular greenhous gases hinder it's escape from our atmosphere.

In short, the more greenhouse gases there are the more heat is trapped within our atmosphere. It's this principle which is described as the greenhouse effect.

As for when it started - it's always been around. Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are naturally occuring gases and have always been a component of the atmosphere. If it wasn't for the natural greenhouse effect our planet would be so cold that it would be uninhabitable and life would never have evolved.

Since the Industrial Revolution began about 200 years ago human activities have greatly increased the levels of all the greenhouse gases and this is what's led to global warming.

The notion that there may be a link between greenhouse gas emissions and higher temperatures was first suggested in 1811 but it wasn't until 1896 that the Swedish chemist Svate Arrenhius established the links between emissions of greenhouse gases, the greenhouse effect and global warming.

Mostly the green house effect started with the advent of INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. It was during this period that the gases such as carbon dioxide, mono oxides and tetra oxides began to be released in open environment. green house effect is nothing but global warming. It was during this period that the downfall of the environment also started, because millions of trees were cut down to fulfill human needs. There are green houses released in the environment and these cause global warming and in return this is also called Green House Effect.
