I'm 21, I get distracted easily when it comes to reading or paying attention at work or school. My grades suffer because of it. I told my mom that I think I have A.D.D., but she laughed it off and said that I don't have A.D.D. and that I'm just lazy. I'm not lazy... I want to do well in school, but I can't seem to focus. Maybe it is anxiety that is distracting me, I'm not sure. I wonder if I should see a doctor on my own and get prescribed something, or am I making a big deal about this?

You are not making a big deal about this and you should see your doctor on your own. You may have ADD and despite what some people said, if that is the case, you will need medication for this. Medication can often help a lot with ADD and should always be tried.

Also, if you are diagnosed with ADD, there are some things your school can do to help you be less distracted. One of these things (just as an example) is that you may be able to take tests in a room alone so that you have less to distract you.

Also, there is a possibility that you may be depressed. The symptoms of ADD are also symptoms that a person can get from being depressed. Most people think that a person who has the illness Depression is sad all the time. This is usually the case but not always. A person may not feel sad at all.

This is another reason why you need to see a doctor. Only a doctor can give you a thorough examination and diagnose exactly what the problem.

I can tell from what you write that you are not lazy! Your mother is wrong. Please see a doctor soon. I have known 2 people for years who have ADD. Life is hard enough without not getting help for something that makes life much harder.

If you feel you should see a dr, then you should see a dr.
Get ready by writing down everything that bothers you, then make the call.

Your mother may be a wonderful person, but is she a licensed physician? Go with your hunches.

You should see a doctor, but I wouldn't jump immediately for a prescription. Discuss your problems thoroughly with your doctor, and be open to non-drug treatments. Only when those fail should you resort to prescription meds, which might be helpful where other options weren't.

Good luck!
