before i answer certain "illiterate replies" here from morons...i would like to answerthis question from all my knowledge...

The main contender or rival of arjuna was Karna...who possessed a very very powerful weapon given to him By Lord Indra...(which is another story)...that is why in order to ensure that Arjuna has an advantage or an equal power against Karna, Shri Krishna Advised Arjuna to Pray to Maa Durge...which he did and recieved the blessing to win the war.

i think that's what it is.

Now some retorts to the replies of few highly idiotic ppl...i am not going to allow any thing like this against a religion which they don't have any idea about(go on gimme thumbs down)

Religious icons always tell their followers to worship things. Otherwise their religion would have already died off ages ago

blast! oh....hunduism doesn't preach...doesn't believe in conversions of faith...get your roots of knowledge strengthened sir,its been more than 8000 yrs...that this sole religion has survived till now...it will foerever...even after "no preaching", "no conversions"...its still strong....who are you to predict such useless things?

because Durga is one bad a** babe, and Krisha has a great appreciation of all things feminine. One does not realize one's godhead unresolved between male/female-there must be acceptance and communion between the two

"this is an example of lack of discipline and manners and respect"
what a bad terribly good example you are. lol

Sri krishna had to covince somehow Arjuna to fight and Arjuna was full of doubts Krishna told him all the yogas just to make him feel that it was the rule of the nature that the war is being fought no heart feelings and emotional attachement Arjuna temporarily understood them .But when we see the mahabharat arjuna acted as if he has totally forgotten it.Like the episode of abhimanyu he was out of his senses and many more, and even after the war was won he was a lay man rather than a transformed person that he was given the greatest knowledge so Arjuna could not live upto Krishnas expectations so he is not worshipped.

The Devi Durga assumes many aspects according to the tasks to be performed by Her—sometimes, sweet and tender; and at others, terrible and devouring. But, She is always kind and gracious to Her devotees. Lord Krishna advised Arjuna, the Pandava hero, to worshipped the Goddess before starting the fight against the evil-minded Kauravas. He fought and won through Her grace.--

Lord Krishna advised Arjuna to worship Goddess Durga in Mahabharat to ensure victory in battle

Please nevermind these small minded and arrogant people who post knowing full well they haven't a clue of what the answer is to your question is. Most of them don't even know the history of their own faith let alone the faith of others. They post their thoughts regardless of their ignorance thinking that they are "witnessing" and giving "testimony", but they do not bring others to their faith with their insults and rude behavior: they only make themselves look stupid and as such are poor representatives of their so called religion.

These so called Christians are so quick to point out that they have the only truth, yet there are over 9000 different denominations of Christianity each of them arguing that they have the truth.

Most of the Prostestant denominations have a very short history many less than a few hundred years, yet they are quick to criticize those religions that have roots in antiquity and even criticize the few Christian denominations that go back to the first century.

In contrast to the relatively short history of western protestant denominations, the roots of Islam go back to the year 570, Orthodox and Coptic churches precede that by another 500 years. The Buddha was born over 2500 years ago. Scholars say that the period between 3200 and 3100 BC is the period in which Lord Krishna lived on earth, many aspects are even older!

i dnt kno much abt this episode but those who worship Maa Durga and follow dharma are never ever defeated in war. Maa Durga protects them in her nine forms. She even protects thier "kula"(family).maa Durga always took avtaaras to kill the evil and is so merciful tht she gave moksha to the worst of the demons such as Shumbh, Nishumbha and many others. She protected the srishti many times from adharma when even the devtaas gave up. Maa Durga is the power of Brahma,Vishnu. Shiva and all other demiGods together. She is Shakti personified.most powerful n opulent.to know her nine forms pls read the scripyure mentioned below.
source-Durga Saptashati.

Maa Durga is so powerful tht even the best of sages cant describe her. she is God's power.

That's actually quite a good question, I've no clue. Apparently so that people with imaginary chips on their shoulders can attack you using their faith as a shield rather than answer your question like a decent human being.
