Well an angler is a proper term used for a person who fishes with a hook , for instance , a Woman Angler sounds better than a Fisherwoman.

In another respect fisherman use many tactics besides a hook and line so the term Angler clarifys that

You have commercial fisherman which use nets and traps to catch fish they are not anglers (because they dont use a hook) but they are called fisherman.

That is the main difference between the 2

A fisherman is someone who does it for fun or it could mean someone who works on a boat and catches them with nets.
An angler has fshing down to a science

Methinks that a fisherman fishes for a living. An angler fishes for sport/ personal table fare.

I would think an angler that uses live bait such as a worm to catch fish he/she "Angles" for fish whereas a "fishermen" that fishes for fish uses artificial bait such a lure. An Angler or a fisherman.
