Well an angler is a proper term used for a person who fishes with a hook , for instance , a Woman Angler sounds better than a Fisherwoman.
In another respect fisherman use many tactics besides a hook and line so the term Angler clarifys that
You have commercial fisherman which use nets and traps to catch fish they are not anglers (because they dont use a hook) but they are called fisherman.

Methinks that a fisherman fishes for a living. An angler fishes for sport/ personal table fare.

In many contexts, there is no difference. However, a fisherman is sometimes used to denote one who captures fish (or even shellfish like lobster) by any means. An angler usually means one who uses a rod, line, and hook to catch fish

I would think an angler that uses live bait such as a worm to catch fish he/she "Angles" for fish whereas a "fishermen" that fishes for fish uses artificial bait such a lure. An Angler or a fisherman.
