I have a monkey as a pet and he has gotten too big to keep and is very mischevious. Can I just put him to sleep or do I need to try and find a zoo or something like that to give him to? I am talking about legally and morally..

This is the problem, a grown up animan and he is acting up now where he used to be calmer.. I just didn't know if I could put him down myself or not.. I know it seems cruel but nobody really wants him and it wouldn't be cruel to do it quickly, I mean he wouldn't suffer. But I don't think I could get into trouble for it.

It's your monkey you can have him put to sleep in you want to...god's not gonna get ticked at you for putting him down but why do that if you can find a zoo to take him. I'd take him for ya but my dog would eat him

Naruto #…that's horrible...you would be eating some atheist long lost cousin!

Only YOU can determine what's morally right or wrong for you. Legally, you might have to feed him something to get him sick in order to have a reason to put him down. Vets don't generally euthanise a healthy animal simply for convenience. And don't expect the humane society or an animal shelter to take him. They rarely take exotics. If it'd ease your conscience, then I'd say by all means check with a zoo and see if they'll take him. You'd get the added benefit of being able to go there and see your little "star."

Your best option is to find it a new home at a zoo or sanctuary.
Not your best choice of a pet. If the monkey is healthy then it would be a shame and possibly a legal issue to put it to sleep.

I'm a biologist and I work with exotic animals. Damn it! I'm sorry, but I just get so.... UGH... at people who think getting monkeys as pets is a good idea. I work with monkeys, and they are like having 2 year old children who are faster than you.

I'm SURE you could find a zoo or a wildlife sanctuary that will gladly take it from you, and give it a life it deserves with people who know how to take care of it properly. Don't punish your monkey for your mistake.

You would have a hard time finding a vet that would be willing to put any kind of monkey to sleep. Legally and morally, you need to try to find a zoo or animal sanctuary.

I would opt for a zoo . I usually only deal with human morality but don't take it lightly after reading how Descartes used to butcher life animals thinking the had no feeling nor intelligent awareness.
I would also think sleep beats abuse and terminal suffering .
peaceout

Don't really know about "morally", but follow "fireyhairedfairy"'s
advice, which seems logical.
Word to the wise: usually a zoo will not take grown up animals.

I'd suggest a zoo, although they may not take it. If you have a Humane Society (place that takes animals no one else wants), you can take it there, too. You can try an advertisement in the newspaper as well.

Otherwise, you'll have to put it to sleep.

I have never been faced with a decision like that but I am also the one who refuses to take the pets to the vet...it's my husbands job because I would probably try to sell the house or the weekend car for my cats or dog.... if your pet won't get better or won't have much of a life after the surgery I guess that is where the cutoff would be but, If it were me I would still have it done .

Poop bombs aside, monkeys often don't make good pets. Would you want to be a pet? It's better to adopt them as a child. How old is he? I would try to find a better placement for him before considering putting him to sleep. That seems harsh. Good luck...for the monkey!
