To really figure out if a tomato is a fruit or vegetable, you need to know what makes a fruit a fruit, and a vegetable a vegetable. The big question to ask is, DOES IT HAVE SEEDS?
If the answer is yes, then technically, you have a FRUIT. This, of course, makes your tomato a fruit. It also makes cucumbers, squash, green beans and walnuts all fruits as well. VEGETABLES such as, radishes, celery, carrots, and lettuce do NOT have seeds (that are part of what we eat) and so they are grouped as vegetables.
Now don't go looking for tomatoes next to the oranges in your grocery stores. Certain fruits like tomatoes and green beans will probably always be mostly referred to as "vegetables" in today's society.
I hope this helped :}

What makes a fruit a fruit is seeds. You can look far and wide, but I guarantee you that you will never find a vegetable with seeds. A fruit, though, has seeds. Since tomatoes have seeds, they are a fruit. Also, most fruits simply have a "fruity" taste. Tomatoes are the exception to this tasty rule.

If it has seeds on the inside (or outside like a strawberry) and is the seed pod of a flower, it is a fruit. Vegetables that are not fruits include lettuce (leaf), potatoes (root), celery (stalk). In other words parts of a plant that are not the seed pod from a flower.
Other vegetables that are seeds but not fruit are most grains (corn, wheat, rye, etc) because they are not the seed pods of flowers.

Technically, tomato is a fruit. Because it is developed from the ovary at the base of the flower and it contains the seeds of the plant.

I think that anything that contains the seed that will grow a new plant is usually called a fruit.

The plant puts forth flowers, whose seeds are then encased in the tomato structure. If that isn't a fruit, I don't know what is.

tomato is considered as a fruit because it develops from the fertilized ovary of the plant. it is a true fruit and it is a berry. it has seeds which are developed from the ovules. any thing whcih develops from ovary is considered as fruit and from the ovules are seeds.
