Why can't the fishes, clams and plankton in it survive.

Each water species has a pH range in which it will thrive. If the water in which it lives goes outside of this range, the species doesn't survive. It's that simple. PS. Your grammar is awkward. Better,

And the actual problem with acid rain tends to be that it lowers pH- knocking the nutrients off'f soil partilces, which travel into bodies of water.... creating a boom in life and the subsequent killing of everything in the water (eutrophication).
