I mean in terms of getting a job

A BFA in painting probably won't ever help you make money as an actual painter and the reason why is that most artists who manage to sale their work don't have this degree and such a degree really wouldn't sway a gallery owner one way or another when it comes to deciding if they want to offer your work for sale. Nor will it make any difference to those buying your paintings. No one ever buys a painting because the artist has a degree.

What can you do with a BFA in painting? You can teach art. And there are some jobs in advertising where such a degree will help you get your foot in the door. But in advertising there is little need for actual, original paintings and you'll end up doing illustrations.

If the degree were in other areas of art, like illustration or photography or animation you would stand a much better chance earning a living from the training you've received.

I make a decent living at it, but no one cares if I have a degree or not. They want to see what my art looks like. College was a wonderful journey, though and certainly not a waste of time.

Wish I would have majored in business and marketing while taking art classes. That would have been a smart way of making sure I could sell my art wisely.

If you go back to college and add a teaching certificate you can teach in a public school system while continuing to paint and sell your work. You could also continue with an MFA and teach in a college. What's important is what YOU want to do.

if you want to teach, it's good to have. If you want to sell artwork, get some business under your belt.

For graphic design work they might want to see that you know software and have the artistic ability so have a portfolio of digital work as well as traditional artwork.

For being a painter? Well, that takes hard work and a bit of luck. Best find out who was sucessfull and ask them to give you advice on the selling/networking aspect.

No. It is just a piece of paper that gets you nowhere. The piece of paper that is ... the study should bring you everywhere ;-)

Very strange but I believe art is actually the only study where what you learned is more important to your 'employer' than the diploma.
