You are definitely better off having a passport, but it is not necessarily required.
Every island in the Caribbean has its own entry requirements. Most countries allow you to visit for up to two or three months if you show proof of U.S. citizenship and a return or onward ticket. Some countries, however, require that you have a valid passport.
Effective January 23, 2007, all U.S. citizens traveling by air to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada are required to have a valid passport to enter the United States. As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.

Why do people who don't know try to answer this question. My husband and I just got back from a 10 day southern Caribbean cruise. We did NOT have a passport and everything went very smoothly. We did apply for a passport and received it shortly after the cruise because you will need one starting in 2008. Check out the State Department website for the exact rules.

If you are a US citizen, you will not need a passport for a sep 07 cruise. It would be better to get it though for 2 reasons. 1: starting in late Dec of 07 or early Jan of 08, a passport will be needed. 2: If for some reason you get stuck on an island or have to get to leave the ship to get back home for an emergancy, you will need a passport. The requirement is, to fly in or out of the US a passport is needed but going by ship, it is not needed till 08.

Yes, you need a passport to cruise anywhere now. Trust me, they won't let you board unless you show it.

In Alaska last year they would not let people board. They did however let them call to get a faxed copy.

Don't waste your time, get the passport.
