You need a lawyer for this case because the judge will probably throw the book at you. Speed limits simply don't go from 55 to 25 without an intermediate speed limit and signs giving warnings stating both reductions in speed.
In addition the physical environment that you were driving in should have given you some indication that 63 mph was no longer an appropriate speed to be driving.
Quite honestly I find it amazing that the cop didn't arrest you for reckless driving, +38 mph is a seriously big ticket. In all states you will have at the minimum 5 points added to your license, they could easily tack on more.
If you chose not to use a lawyer, then don't get greedy in court.
Talk to the DA before you actually get into court and see what's on his mind .
Give lots of money in exchange for not getting your licenses suspended.Give lots of money in exchange for not getting all the points that this offense could carry.
It will take you far less time to get back the money than it will to get the points off your license-and the points are cumulative
Good luck and have a checkbook with you

As another person answered, it will depend on the municipality & area where your speeding ticket was issued. Besides a huge fine & possible suspension of your license, your insurance company may increase your rate. In addition, you can be charged with reckless operation, since you were going over 15mph faster than the speed limit.

I'm in agreement about ignorance. Even if there is no speed limit sign up, every state has a set maximum speed for every situation, as stated in the traffic code. If the 25mph zone is permanent, go back, if you can, & look for the sign. Find it & chalk it up to a life lesson. If it isn't there & it wasn't a construction zone, photograph the area. Take it to the judge, plead your case, & maybe he/she will let you off easy. Good luck!!

A great deal of what may happen depends on where you are and how your local authoriites react to speeding. One thing to know though is if the person who wrote the ticket is not in court then you should ask that it be dismissed instead of volunteering that you were speeding. It is that old thing about facing your accuser. Many folks think they have the ticket in hand and they just have to pay, this is not necessarily so. You may also ask for a driving class in order to diminish a fine or remove the ticket from your records.

Ignorance is no excuse when it comes to the law. You were going 38 miles a hour over the speed limit. This will be a large fine and a possible suspension of your license. If you were in a school zone, your license will be suspended.

Two things will happen. They will tell you that ignorance of the posted speed limit is no excuse for one, and the DA will try to get you to plead guilty to a lesser offense.

Otherwise, 20mph over the limit can be considered reckless driving, and in my state that's 8 points off your license. You have already admitted to going over even what you THOUGHT the speed limit was by more than 10mph, so I'd say you're hosed.

You did 38 over and didn't get arrested? Wow! That cop was having a REALLY good day or you were amazingly lucky! That's a dangerous driving charge in most jurisdictions with a $500 - $1,000 fine or more. Some places will pull your ticket for up to a year on that one.

I'd HIGHLY recommend you get an attorney for this one! You need one!

I may be the bearer of bad news, but depending on the judge you could very well find you leave that court without a licence as you were caught doing over twice the speed limit..If you do keep your licence you could find that the fine is bloody huge, with a shed load of endorsements

You will probably get your license suspended, fined heavily, and possible jail time (depends on the state).
