He can request a transcript from the IRS for each year showing what was reported under his social security number to the IRS. This would included W-2 earnings, bank interest, dividends, stock sales, mortgage interest paid. The only thing that would not be reported on the transcripts would be any state withholdings, such as on his W-2's. At least if he can get what was reported to the IRS for each year since 2003 he can see who he worked for, and contact them to see if he can a copy of his W-2 if he can't find his copy for that year. He also needs to contact the IRS for 2003 since he owes for that year. If you are owed a refund you only have 3 years to collect that refund, but if you owe the IRS you owe them until you pay it off. He needs to find out how much tax, interest and penalties he owes, and see if he can work out a payment plan with the IRS. You won't be responsible for taxes he owed before you married him, but any if there's refunds on any future returns you file with him jointly the IRS can seize those refunds and apply them against taxes he owes.

He can get copies of the W-2s from his employers. He should then file all missing returns and set up a payment plan with the IRS to clear any debt with them.
For your own peace of mind, tell him there won't be a wedding until he's clean with the IRS and the debt is paid in full. And tell him that YOU will be handling all tax returns and tax payments once you're married and they'll be the first item on the budget after rent and food.
Although you won't be held responsible for his old tax debts, you'll have to jump through hoops with the IRS every year to preserve the portion of any refund attributable to your income and withholdings.
You will suffer much misery as the IRS collects their due. Your refunds will be delayed 2 - 3 months every year while the Form 8379 Injured Spouse Allocation is processed. You won't be able to establish any joint bank or investment accounts with him for risk of the IRS seizing them for his tax debt. You won't want to purchase a home with him for risk of the IRS attaching a lien on the property to secure the tax debt.

Get this taken care of. You won't be responsible for his prior taxes, but as soon as your married and file a joint return, you will be responsible for the current taxes. Sounds like he's not very responsible in this area. Be sure he's having adequate taxes taken out currently, or you may owe when you file jointly. When he does file and set up a payment plan, that will also impact the amount of money he has to help support the family. Wait until he files his back taxes and makes payments for about 6 months to see how responsible he's going to be. Good advice from Boston again.

He needs to track down his W-2's from those years - his employers from that time might be able to provide them, otherwise he'll have to ask the IRS for them. He needs to file. For any year where he owes, there will be penalties and interest in addition to the overdue taxes, but they'll continue to accumulate if he doesn't take care of it. If he has a refund coming for any of the tax years 2004 thru 2006, he'll get it, with no penalty.

He needs to contact his employers for years 04-05 and 06 and obtain duplicates of his W-2 forms. You can then go online to IRS.GOV and previous years forms; get the appropriate forms; fill them out and send them in. If you marry this person either fill out your return as Married, Filing Seperate or; include a form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation) with a Married, Filing Joint return, so the IRS cannot touch any of your money for your husband's debt.

you should contain ALL W-2 kinds which you receive on a single tax return. this is prohibited to apply 2 separate tax returns for earnings gained via an identical person interior an identical twelve months. the internet website ought to make it easier to head into extra beneficial than one EIN. If it does not, then you definately ought to no longer use that website to document. you should document employing the two paper kinds (which ask you to head into in basic terms the quantity, no longer the EIN) or a manner that facilitates you to head into 2 or extra EIN's which includes a distinctive website, application which you should purchase, a expert tax preparer, and so on.
