I've seen many programs on TV talking about the connecting of synapse in the brain, this activity is very active until about the age of twelve and then you start to lose it, and that's why children pick up on things quicker than adults. There are exceptions to this rule, take for instance Jacqueline du Pre` she heard the cello on the radio at just about five and said to her Mother, "Mommie I want to make that sound" and her Mother who had studied music and was a teacher of piano, got her her cello, and in a short period of time she was winning her ribbons for first place, and went on to be a world renowned cellist. Musical talent is just born in some people, it's weird to see a small child play a piece that some adults take years to accomplish. Some children also have perfect pitch, which Jackie did have. I'm so jealous of these people, they look at a concerto and play it once and commit it to memory, amazing isn't it ?

Well if you are talking about a difference in age then yes. Kids tend to pick up stuff faster than adults because they want to learn so much and they still are learning so its easier. The brain is fresh and ready to go as oppose to older people. It doesn't mean that they can't learn of course, it just means it takes more time for them. Of course another thing that gets in the way of learning is no practice or dedication. If you don't practice or you are forced to practice when you don't really want to then you won't pick it up. Everything you do you have to do it because you like it, love it or find it interesting. If you have no interest in it you won't put that much focus and attention to it. I just started learning French and I'm doing pretty good. My next language will be Italian. I already know English and Spanish. Of course Spanish, French, and Italian are almost the same. I love languages and I guess that's why it works. Anyways good luck I used to play piano when I was little and I was ok at it....I was forced to do it though and hated it....now that i'm older I wish I hadn't stopped....I'm feeling it now that I want to learn and its taking me a while to remember and re-learn. Hang in there good luck!

Kid's brains are like sponges, they're ready to absorb anything. And yes, they do say kids learn foreign languages better and faster than adults can. I took French in grade school and again as an adult, and quite frankly, I remember more of my French from grade school. I'm sure that there is a medical study on this matter, but personally, I don't know why that is.

Having a job and responsibilities does have something to do with it but physically, childrens' brains aren't hard wired yet. When you're young your develops connections with each new piece of information you learn and the brain is more flexible and able to rewire connections. At about puberty the brain starts becoming hardwired, setting the pattern for the rest of your life. The more you learn as a child, the easier it is for you to learn as an adult. There is research that shows that the brain can rewire itself after puberty, as in the case of stroke victims when one part of the brain can take over for the damaged area, but nothing like in childhood.
Interestingly enough, the language ability and music ability portions of the brain are connected, and start to hardwire themselves at around eight years old. So yes, that's why it's harder for most adults to learn a foreign language.

Sure.
Kids learn faster than adults because they are more impressionable.
We all learn to talk as children, before we actually learn to read.
It's sort of an instinct, as children to understand. The earlier we start, the easier it is for us to learn.
I guess as an adult, your mind is more set down, settled down and slowed down.
While as a child, it's is all just beginning.
That's how I see it.

When you say, "Is it the same reason why I can't pick up a foreign language?" you are on the right track.
However, it is not a case of "mature" vs. "immature" brain, but, rather, as my high school biology teacher put it, for one thing the young are like a sponge, they can soak up knowledge rapidly because they have so little knowledge at the time and
older persons have more responsiblilities, worries, etc., which greatly affects leaning and
they usually get more rest and their bodies are not suffering from tiredness, ailments, etc., of even young adults.
As to focus, Children are less apts to focus, so that would be a plus on your side.
But, you've got it; the young can learn much faster and easier!
(But of course, some things are beyond their ken, things which require maturity!)

Children learn a lot faster than adults. That's why they are teaching foreign language in elementary school now.

It's possible to spend a lot of time and income trying to find approaches to teach your young ones how to learn and boost their examining skills. Is hard to instruct a small kid how to see, and also tempting them to learn is a challenge in itself.
