There is no physical need to believe in unperceived things, per se. There is a definite need to understand the world around us. Millenia ago, before the age of reason and the scientific revolution, people began ascribing agent causes to natural phenomena. Since the human race began setting out to understand the systematize knowledge of the physical universe, the need for god(s) has begun shrinking. More Atheists are appearing, not because they can disprove the existence of god(s), but they are able to understand the world around us without needing to reference him/her/it/them. There is no reason to think he/she/it/they is/are out there.
Atheists shouldn't be focused on the ideas or traditions of the past that some people still choose to believe, nor should they change the right of people to believe in them. That is a collosally ineffective and immoral waste of time.

First you should ask a question without imposing your beliefs in the question itself. Now here is the answer. If you believe in a higher power great. Breeding people to get rid of a sect is very non-religious. If you do that you will go to hell or your religions equal. Also eventually others would stop believing in higher powers. Just cause you stop people from believing one thing for a period of time doesn't mean it will stop it forever. Atheists would try to help people but it is impossible to help people who don't want to be helped. And think that almost every war ever fought was over religion. If it wasn't for the nonbelievers the be-livers might not have the technology to win the war.

"Electric-shock therapy...genetically engineer a virus...bred out of gene pool."
Doesn't sound like you are much interested in the technological progress of the species, sounds kind of scary actually. I am a Christian and Im the same species as you.

Your question seems to be suggesting that believers are hopelessly sick with this desire to believe and the only way to cure the problem is to kill/torture/sterilize us. How exactly are we holding back technological advances anyway? I think you have a mental issue and you sound a little scary. The only responsibility anyone has to our species is to try to be a contributing member of society and to raise up the next generation responsibly.

I have no problem with anyone believing anything they like as long as they don't force their beliefs on me or use those beliefs to make laws against science, education, love, medicine, health or anything else. If you want to go to church and pray to gods feel free to do so but your gods are not my gods and I have no interest in them.

This need you speak of has been ingrained in their minds. They have been raised to believe that they are terrible, sinful beings and they NEED God to be saved from an eternity in Hell.
Without this brainwashing, they would never have developed a dependence on God.

A specifically PHYSICAL need? You need to think that out a bit more.
Also, electro-shock therapy IS still around.

You don't have a physical need. You've just convinced yourself that you do, somehow. Don't worry, psychologists stopped using electroshock to cure mental illness years ago.

So...did that mean you are for it or against it? It sounds like you are leaning both ways. And it was too complicated for me to figure out. Sorry.
