In 1904 NYC opened its first subway line but it was not the first in the U.S.

Boston opened its first underground line in 1897 for the purpose of taking trolley cars off the street in one area. Even though it wasn't a subway as most would call it, Boston is credited with the first subway in the U.S.

Note: Russia did not open a subway until 1935 in Moscow. The first London underground line opened in 1863.
