Excellent pets, their coat requires quite a bit of brushing and grooming however, and keep in mind that they are technically a sheepdog, so expect a bit of herding. All the Shelties I know are pretty much yappers; goes with the herding I believe.

It depends on the situation, they are a smaller breed with big energy needs. They do better with an active owner who understands that they bark - ALOT. Like all the herding breeds, there can be nipping problems so please consider puppy training right away. They are very communicative and be prone to OCD like behavior, spinning in circles, tailchasing, phantoms (more barking at nothing). Its usually the owner's fault for not exercising the dog enough.
And as long as you are willing to commit to the exercise...an occupied mind is a happy mind or herding breeds, its a wonderful small dog.
Be careful of blindness and deafnessissues in the merles and there used to be a serious seizure problem in the breed but I'm on up on the subject as much as I used to be. Talk to breeders at the show so you can see what a correct speciman looks like. Watch them in the flyball, agility and obedience rings where the breed excels. Consider asking the breeders at a show if they have any older puppies, dogs or pet returns that may need a home. STAY OUTTA THE PET STORES!! The chances of the dog being purebred decreases dramtically - and you want a mentally and physically sound dog. If you know someone that has a Sheltie that you admire, ask them where they got it from.
Good luck!

Shelties are the best. My Sheltie is so good she's almost 9 months old now. My first dog was a Sheltie when I was 7 years old and have always had one in my life. They are very smart, loyal, active just an all around good dog.....

i admire my sheltland. She is blended with a lab. they're very lively and could desire to get interest. they're super around childrens and are very friendly. My Shetland tries to chase cats, yet i think of she is basically desirous to play. She likes to play with our friends dogs that's somewhat dogs not plenty greater advantageous than a cat. She continuously has a lot of power, yet she is a huge puppy.

They are excellent dogs with one drawback, they must be groomed daily or they mat. Its good if you take them for obedience training they love it and are very good at it, it makes them much better pets too.
