Burn your important files to cd/dvd before trying anything.
Just boot your computer with the vista dvd inserted in your dvd drive and follow all the instructions to prepare your hard drive.
You should first check if your computer meets the requirements to run vista. You can check on microsoft website.
However, I would recommend to keep XP.

You should be able to upgrade your system with the ultimate DVD this will be the best way to go as some of the programs might not run with vista.
That's what i found out when i first loaded Vista ultimate on my system so i re did it as an upgrade and kept the Vista Ultimate on another hard drive for testing for programs that will or will not work with it make sure that you have enough memory as Vista ultimate needs 1GB of memory.

well i suggest u back up all the relevant files u really need to a secondary storage device like cds or flash drives or a portable hard drive. then format ur computer and wen u reinstalling u put in the vista disc instead of ur xp. make sure ur pc meets the requirement for vista.
