Water cannot spoil, per se, if it is kept in a clean container and never comes into contact with bacteria, but it can become contaminated with bacteria. Everytime you drink out of your cup, bacteria from your lips and mouth get into the water, and will live in it. This is one of the reasons why they do not recommend re-using plastic water bottles.
