If you are not "that overweight" and are just looking to tone up a bit, I would suggest increasing the amount of exercise that you get. If that does not work, or if you are already very active, you should try just skipping the junk food and/or eating smaller portions. The problem with diets, especially if you do not need to lose significant weight, is that they can often cause nutritional deficiencies or slow your metabolism (leading to future weight gain instead of loss.)

Do a search online for healthy eating tips, and check out the below article for some information on diets.

I understand where you are coming from. Everyone has their comfort zone with their body...Try Weight Watchers....it really isn't a diet. It teaches you to eat smart....All food is valued on a point system depending on your weight. I found this to be the easiest way to lose the extra weight and maintain it because it teaches you a lifestyle not just a crash diet. Also working out daily....either at a gym or even walking help the pounds and inches come off quickly! Good Luck!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Try a vegetarian diet. Do you know any vegetarians who are overweight? I don't think they exist.
