I just got invited last minute to a surprise birthday party at a restaurant for a friend that I don't know so well. I do know that she likes eating at this restaurant that we are invited to. Would it be cheesy if I got her a certificate from this restaurant or does it seem like I put no effort into thinking about her gift.
The thing is I just found out about it tonight and the party is tomorrow night.

Any other ideas.

If you don't know her so well but you know she likes that restaurant, that would be a great idea. You can't go wrong, I think.

You could buy the g.c., but what about just a card and a gift that doesn't show a price, like a little ornament? They are available all over, stuff like glass animals and trinket boxes, also they are low cost. Women always like them and because it's a last-minute invite, she can't expect anything more from you. I always have reservations about g.c.s because a gift is not supposed to show a price tag - I would only give them to my family, rather than acquaintances.

Gift certificate, yes...same restaurant as the dinner, no. Stop somewhere and get a GC...plenty of convenience stores sell a wide range of gc's these days, hit one on your way to dinner. Don't forget the birthday card!

I think it's a perfectly lovely gift. It's something you know she will enjoy.

Put it in a box with some tissue and wrap it in some really pretty paper and add some silk flowers or really nice bow. The presentation is just as important as the gift.

Nah, I think gift certificates are great. If not at this restuarant, try getting her a certicate for another place or even for Starbucks. Does she like to read? Get her a certificate for Barnes and Nobels (I'd personally love that). But if you really don't have time, one for the resturant and a nice card would be fine.

When in doubt, give flowers. Maybe a rose mix in a vase so she can enjoy them with her meal.

I got my grandma some flowers and became the favorite grandchild that night.

I agree, I think a GC is fine but perhaps from another place. You can get one right now online at amazon.com.
