I Have been having very bad dreams lately about Iraq. I am a soldier in the Army National Guard. We have been to Iraq once for a year and a half, and I had no problem, But we are scheduled to go back again soon, and I have been having dreams about being shot and killed or tortured etc, and it scares me. Other than the bad dreams i feel fine during the day. I admit I am a lil more scared now, then I was then, about going back because of the increase of violence. But where are these dreams coming from and why am I having them? I really hope none of these dreams ever come true....Man...thats scary. I know some people will say go see a psychiatrist, but I really don't have the money for that. I just want to know why they are happening, and what to do to stop them. Maybe a lil fun would help but I dont have alot of money and I really dont know what there is to do out there..lol..Anyways, Thanks for your help guys.

Combat serviceman often have this type of dream when returning to the field, and many have the dreams for years later. PTSD, I am quite sure you have heard. It appears to me you are experiencing a PTSD dream event. You may even find now or in the future, the smell of gun powder form fireworks, or the sound of choppers, or a smell will trigger thoughts and emotions you felt during your service there.
What occurs is an injury to the brain, the body hormones necessary for survival are so high for such a long period of time it scars the brain with the memory.
In civilian life you may display other symptoms. You may want to consider contacting the mental health department at a VA clinic. As a member of the Army National Guard you quality for treatment for free from them. You need only your military ID to be seen. The sooner you see someone, the less problems you will have with this injury.
You can email me if you have any further questions.

I wish you the best.

Your dreams are coming from your subconscious and past experiences in Iraq. If you think one thought in a day about going to Iraq, it is grounds for you to have a dream about it at night. Your mind is like a computer that holds memory on a disk. So, anything that is stored up on that disk can be pulled up and displayed in the form of a dream. However, your emotional state has a lot to do with how the dream will be displayed. If you are sad when you think about Iraq, then you will have sad dreams. If you are fearful when you think about Iraq, then you will have fearful scary dreams and on and on. I fought in the Gulf War in 1990. After I came back I would have dreams all the time about being gassed to death. Or being bombed because I was in a area where bombs were dropped all the time. But I found out later that my spiritual condition had a lot to do with how my dreams were turning out. Okay, take care and God bless you.
