They are just being protective of him, I don't see any harm. My daughter is 19 months and there have been a few times that a helmet would not have been a bad idea. Have you explained your parents good intentions to your husband. At least they are taking the effort in keeping him safe, there are alot of people out there they don't. I've seen first hand what these little toddlers can do to their heads. I think your son will probably just think of it as a game and not something that is meant to keep him from hurting himself.

A helmet for a bike? It sounds like they bought it just to wear around the house and in that event I think it is bizarre. Unless the child has a particular illness that he may cause physical harm to himself, I see no need for a helmet. 18 month old children get bumps and bruises, but how are they supposed to learn if they have the entire world "safe-guarded". I would politely ask them to can the helmet idea and to just keep a close eye on him.

Is this even a serious question? Who in the hell puts a helmet on a child to circumvent proper supervision?
All children are going to get bumps and bruises, it is normal wear and tear of growing up. I think your parents are nuts for thinking that a logical thing to do is to helmet their grandson.
I would think it damaging to a child's psyche to have to wear a helmet when going to grandma and grandpas. When does it stop?
By the way, do you really want your kid blurting out to his daycare buddies in a year or so that he is excited to wear his helmet at grandma's house next weekend? Your kid will need a helmet for school cause kids will beat the crap out of him for being a weirdo.

It seems a little bizarre to me that your parents want him to wear a helmet at their house. I would have to ask why? If it because he has a medical condition, then Great Idea. If it is because they don't want him to bump his head, that is part of being a boy and learning what to do. There is no way to protect your son from every injury.

Personally I wouldn't put that on my son and especially if it is going to ruin my marriage. I am 29 years old....I fell a lot and bumped my head and didn't have a helmet and I lived! I got hit in the head by a heavy metal door and my parents just gave me tylenol and called the doctor. The doctor said for them to watch me and to not let me fall asleep for so many hours. Anyway, I would tell my parents thanks but no thanks. Boys will be boys and they will fall...and yes they are going to hurt their heads, but it will not kill them. If it is just from walking around it will not kill them...if someone drops him then I can see it being a problem, but that's not going to happen either. I personally think it was a waste of money.

Is this the bumper bonnet in One Step Ahead, I thought this was the silliest thing I ever saw. Kids do end up bumping their heads, but Id take a look at the house and make sure its child-proofed and your child is well watched. That should eliminate some bumps and bruises. But unless its a serious injury, Im in the school that a little pain or bump helps kids learn not what to do and help grow and tune in their instincts.

I think that is terrible. There is no need to have a helmet on a child when they are in a house. Try picking up a gate. My parents have a octagon shaped gate and they put toys for him in it and he has a blast. It's quite roomy and it's good to have when cooking and you don't want him in the room with hot appliances.

The only time a child needs to wear a helmet inside a building is if they are prone to MANY falls over a short period of time. The only other case would be for a child who is prone to seizures.....
Being allowed to experience minor pain from a fall is what teaches a child to be aware of surroundings and to be cautious....Stick him in a helmet and you cut off his ability to learn from experience.

the helmet can acutually hurt the development of his head so tell them no
also babies and toddlers bounce. their brains and skulls are built for falls
if he starts throwing up or you really think he hit his head hard take him to hospital but dont mess with a helmet

what is your child going to think when looking back at it as an adult and remembering that he had to wear a silly helmet at his grandparents house b/c they were overprotective?! boys will be boys. tell your parents this. if they can't control his behavior and have to resort to relying on a helmet they shouldn't be taking care of him by themselves.
