If the bottles have corks, yes. You need to keep the corks wet. If they have caps, it doesn't matter. If they come in boxes...never mind...

It depends on when you plan to drink the wine. If you go to a liquor store, you will see that they store many bottles upright. This is because they don't plan on the bottles sticking around very long and instead want to maximize visibility.
If you want to store the bottle for a long time, it is generally a best practice to store it on it's side (and in a dark cool place). However some newer wines have synthetic corks, some have screw tops, and some have bottle caps: for these it doesn't matter at all how it is stored.

You need to store wines slichtly inclined to keep the cork wet- otherwise it dries out, crumbles and may even spoil the wine.

If you have a real cork you do because the cork need to be moist other wise air will get into the wine and it will taste vinegary.

Traditional wisdom says to lay it on its side if it has a natural cork stopper.This ensures a liquid,airtight seal around the cork.If it's one of the newer screw caps,I don't think it makes a difference.
