I've seen my mother in law twice in the last year, once at my wedding and once at Christmas. I really would like to try to see her more often, but neither she nor I are much into making conversation. Thus, I'm looking for activities to do with her. We live in a small city, so there's some things to do, but not a lot. Any ideas that don't include sitting across from her trying to come up with something to say?

Host all family gatherings at your house. I was in this same situation...didn't have anything in common with my MIL and conversation was strained. This past year, I have volunteered our house to host all family gatherings, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Niece's graduation, etc. She loves this and it is easier to make conversation with her since there are so many other family members around to chime into the conversation. They like to tell family stories which get my mother in law talking plus it is fun for me to find out about my husbands family. To make it easy, everyone brings a dish and a drink. I really feel like our relationship has grown since I started this. Hope that helps.

Some mother in laws feel that the new woman in her son's life has stolen him from her. Try to do something with the three of you so she understands that you are an addition to her son's life not her replacement. I would simply pick one Sunday a month and have her over for an afternoon and dinner. If you don't cook find out one of your husbands favorite meals growing up and ask her to tell you what to buy and come over and teach you how to make it.

Good luck.....

i always call my mother in law to get special recipies for my husband...its a way to communicate and maybe youll both be cooking dinners together in the future i would always rather have a good time with someone than a good conversation and then later you can talk about what a good time you had doing this or that or how you botched her sons favorite meatloaf recipie...

Better check with your spouse first, to see if your mother-in-law is even interested in anything that you might be interested in. Don't try too hard. It has to be on the natural side.

Remember, that there are many years difference in your ages, and naturally you would have different interests.

Depending on what her interests are, you could go get pedicures, or go to the spa. To really avoid converstation, go see a movie and maybe grab coffee afterwards. Then you can talk about the movie you just saw.

You have got almost the ideal situation with your MIL. Why change a thing? Seriously, don't buy trouble.
